A-33 No Temper tool steel is a thru hot work steel. When you drift a hole
as the punch get hot remove from work and quench in clean clear water return
the punch to the work and continue drifting the hole. This steel can be
welded with out special consideration during welding or post welding.
Forging
Heat slowly and uniformly to a temperature of about 1825 to 1975 degrees
F (lemon to yellow) and forge to shape. As with any tool steels be careful
not to burn work.
Hardening
Reheat the cutting edge about 1 back between 1650 to 1950 degrees
F (salmon to lemon color) depending on hardness required. Quench in clean
cold water.
A-33 can be case hardened with carburizing
and flame hardening. You can use Kasnite to case hardened A-33.
Do Not Draw or Temper
Odds & Ends
Chisel edges need to be kept on the thick side A-33 tends to lose it hardness
quickly on thin edges.
When heat treating you can use a lower
temperature about a good (red color) of 1500 to 1650 degrees F for more
blunt point tools like drift punches or hammer eye drifts.
